RR Senior Golf Club Newsletter

This is a page which allows members to be kept abreast of any important news and or changes that affect Rooster Run Senior Mens' Club.

November 8, 2018

At the board meeting yesterday the board voted on not to disqualify members for not indicating which tees they are playing.  The board voted to change it to if you do not indicate which tees you are playing on your score card your score will default to the red tees.  This way you will still be eligible to cash in the par 3's and only be penalized 4 strokes from the red tee handicap.

The club championship will be played in July providing we have at least 32 players signed up for the tournament.  You will be required to pay five dollars in advance for the tournament.  It will be match play.

We will continue with the points and that will be called the golfer of the year.  and the pay off will be $75. $60, $40, $30, $20 for both gross and net.

The luncheon business meeting will be held the last week of September instead of October.

We are off to a great start for the year we had 72 players yesterday which is the highest we have had in a very long time.  We only had 3 players that signed up that didn't show up which is very good.  If you miss two weeks in a row without letting me know your name will be taken off the signup sheet.

Please get to the first tee 10 minutes before your tee time we are still having a gap around the 8:30 tee time then we have a mod of players between 9 and 9:30.  SHOW UP EARLY FOR YOUR TEE TIME.  The starter has been instructed to let players out if there is no one there and you show up with or without a tee time he will let you go.

See you Saturday night at the annual dinner starts at 5:30 diner at 6:00.

October 25, 2018

It was another successful tournament and business meeting luncheon.  Steve introduced our new board member Dave Ashe as the handicap chairman.  The members approved the elimination of the 90 point rule and opened up the option for anyone to play either one of the forward tees red or the combo.  You must indicate on the score card the tees that you are playing with a "R" for red; "C" for combo and a "W" for white.  The stroke adjustment for playing the combo tees will be 2 strokes.  If you fail to indicate which tee you are playing you will be disqualified.  Lew reported on our financial status and indicated the we are slowly working down the money on the books.  It looks like we will have another great year.  We have started out with six new members which is a good start for the year.  Pete didn't have to many complaints about the lunch he didn't have to eat on a paper plate.

If you haven't paid your dues for the coming year you have until the end of the year to pay them with a $10 late fee.

September 29, 2018

Starting the 1st of October we will be playing winter rules "lift clean and place".

Don't forget to sign up for the tournament and lunch on the 24th of October.  You must sign up by the 17th of October no late entries.  One of the items that will be discussed will be the playing of the forward tees.  Instead of just being able to play the forward tees open it up to be able to play the combo tees, and eliminate the one year commitment.  Make it a week to week option.  The catch is that it will be up to each individual player to be sure to indicate on the score are which tees they are playing.  the other they that members will need to decide on do we open it up to everyone or to just the members the meet the 90 point rule.

It's time to renew your membership.  That has to be sent in to Lew by the 15th of October or there is a $10 late fee.

September 13, 2018

We are getting close to the end of this season.  All of you should have received you membership renewal by now.  We have kept the membership the same for the coming year.  We have our luncheon meeting coming up on 24th October.  If you want to play golf you must let Dave Ashe know by the 17th of October.  Augie will be out of town during the sign up period for this tournament.  It will be a shotgun start at 8:30.  We will be starting on hole one and going back to hole 12.   Lunch will be served between 12:30 and 12:45.  The meeting will start after we have had lunch.  If there is anything you want to bring up or questions you may have that will be a good time to do it.

Dave Ashe will be doing the tournament results starting on the 10th of October.  Augie will be in Europe for a few weeks.  Dave's email is daveashe1951@gmail.com.

This year was a great year and hopefully we can make next year even better.

July 12, 2018

We are well into or summer months and the entries for our weekly tournaments are doing well.  We are averaging over 60 players per tournament.  We are still having a gap at the first tee around 8:30.  You need to get to the tee 10 minutes ahead of your tee time and be ready to tee off when it is your turn.  For those of you that that tee off later and your foursome is ready head to the first tee and if it is open you can tee off.  The starters will be instructed to keep the tee moving.

Here are some ideas for you to think about for our annual meeting in October:
1. Have more tournaments from the forward tees and the combo tees during the winter.
2. Doing a shot gun start during the winter starting around 8 or 8:30.

The nominating committee hasn't had any one interested to be on the board.  We have had two names nominated to be on the board and they would be two very good members for the board.

June 6, 2018

The board has voted to use the forward tees on hole 11 as the drop area for our club tournaments.  If you hit into the water on your tee shot you have a choice to retee or move to the forward tees and drop your ball (not allowed to tee it up in the drop area).

The board is looking for members that would be interested on getting on the board there are three openings on the board.  New ideas and fresh thinking is always good.  So if you are interested on becoming active in the club and bringing your ideas forward contact Augie Rivas, Lew Larson or Wayne Stefenoni and let one of them know that you are interested.

We will not be playing on the fourth of July.

May 4, 2018

Hi Everyone.  It has been awhile since anything has been posted on the news letter.  We are getting into some nice weather and the golf season looks like it's going to be a good year.  We have a lot of new members that have joined us in the past several months.  Hopefully they will enjoy their time with us so lets make them welcome.

We have some changes coming up this year.  For starters the club championship (match play) will not be done this year.  the entries have been dropping of the past several years.  So the board decided not to have the match play tournament.  So the club champion will be determined by the points.  We will have a two champions one being the NET champion and the other being the GROSS champion.

There will be a few members on the board not wanting to run for the board next year.  So if anyone is interested in helping run our club contact an existing board member and let them know that you are interested.

If you are not interested to be on the board but have some ideas for the board to consider let a board member know.

January 12, 2018

Hi everyone I hope all of you brought in the new year on a safe note.  Hopefully 2018 will be better than 2017, I am hoping for a better year.  We had our first board meeting of the year this week.  A few items of interest were discussed.  The board was not sure if our members where aware that you can use the money you have on the books to prieay for your green fees.  Our home and home tournament will be held on May 14th.  We are inviting Windsor and Bodega for sure.  We are trying to find the contact persons for Santa Rosa Counrtry Club and Oakmont.  I want t wish Adienne Larson a Happy Birthday.  I hope you and Lew enjoy your weekend at Fort Bragg.

December 22, 2017

On behalf of the board of directors we would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year.

I would like to wish Dennis Casarotti and Aldo del Carlo all the best.  These two gentleman have been members for a very long time,  Dennis is one of the original members of our club.  So if you happen to see them next week wish them well.  health reasons is the big factor that they have decided not to renew their membership.

As for the latest business at hand.  The pro shop is starting to get on us again for not filling our tee times and not giving them enough time to be able to sell them.  We may have to change the way we are reserving our tee times.  We have 20 tee times blocked which is 80 golfers and we only average 55 golfers.  We will have more information on this topic after the first of the year.

Anyone that meets the new 90 point rule to play the forward tees should submit their request to the board.  Don't just take it upon yourself to forward.  We have to adjust your handicap and set your default on the computer to show that you are playing the forward tees.

December 7, 2017

I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving and are getting ready for the Christmas season.  Our new golf season is off to a good start so far. The course is in great shape.  I hope everyone that attended the banquet enjoyed themselves.  The schedule has been approved and will be posted on the website.  There are a few old tournaments that we brought back and added a few more combo tees.  As we go along we may change a few if we come up with some new ideas.

I'm not sure if I am speaking out of turn here but the latest rumor about Adobe Creek is that they are planning to reopen it and close rooster Run.  Not sure what that will mean for our club but we will just have to wait and see.  I will keep you informed as I hear more about this.

We are planning to host a Home and Home tournament with Windsor and Bodega Bay on the second Monday of May.  Will keep you informed on this as we get closer and hear back from those two clubs.

The prize fund will remain the same for the coming year.

October 25, 2017

At our annual meeting today the members voted on allowing members that have a total of 90 points ( the sum of their age and thei
r handicap from the white tees) could play from the forward tees.  They will have to request permission from the board to move to the forward tees.  Once they have been approved they are required to stay there until the end of the season. The members also agreed to have the same format for the next annual meeting.

There was various suggestions for tournaments for next year.  More tournaments from the forward tees and the red/white combos.  One man scramble.  If anyone has other ideas let Augie know.

Don't forget to renew your dues before November 15 and not a day later because there will be a late fee.

October 11, 2017

Today's tournament was canceled due to the unhealthy air condition.  Hopefully the air quality will improve next week and we will be able to play our tournament.  The sign up deadline for the October 25th tournament is next Wednesday that also includes the lunch.  The hole assignments will be posted on the web site and will also be E-mailed to all participants that I have E-mails for.  We have over 60 players signed up as of 10/11.

October 6, 2017

This Wednesday is the last day to sign up for golf on October 25, 2017.  We are at 60 players and that puts us with two teams one each hole from hole 1 back to 10 the pro shop would like us to not go back into the front nine.  So if we get any more signed up we will have to triple up on some holes.  Lunch is wide open we do not have a limit on how many.  However we need to have a final count bt October 18, 2017.

Some items that we have on the agenda for the meeting are as follows:
                                                                                   1. Rules update
                                                                                    2. Club Championship
                                                                                    3. Dinner Banquet 2018
                                                                                    4. Forward Tees
                                                                                     5. NCGA Dues increase for 2018
                                                                                     6. Points format
                                                                                     7. Tournaments for 2018

September 8, 2017

The Board met with a couple of members from the Windsor Senior Mens Club regarding the Home and Home Tournaments.  Their schedule for next year is June they are invited to lay at Bodega; July Santa Rosa Country Club and August will be their  tournament.  We will host our Home and Home in May of next year and will invite Windsor and Bodega.  Wayne will look into seeing if we can get invited to Bodegas Home and Home.

I have been asked if we had a 2 putt rule when the greens have been punched and during the healing period of the greens.  There is no such rule for our tournaments we must put everything out in our tournaments.  We have canceled next weeks tournament because the greens will only have been one day after being punched.

The board discussed the playing of the forward tees and have decided to see how the the membership felt at the annual meeting on 25th of October.  We talked about maybe doing a red/white tee for some of the members and see if that will generate some interest.  Also we discussed the 90 point system, age plus handicap equals 90 points or more.  W didn't get many responses to the email that was sent out.

Also w discussed the possibility of having annual dinner at a different venue.  One location that was mentioned was Foxtail's banquet facility. Their price is very competitive with Rooster Run.  This is another option we can discuss at the annual meeting in October.

The membership renewals are are due in October.  NCGA has increased the annual dues by $3 this year.  We will cover the increase this year but will have to increase our dues in 2019.

August 11, 2017

The Board is looking into changing the requirements to be able to play the red tees.  It seems that several of our members for whatever reason, being health or ability, are having a hard time playing from the white tees.  Some have expressed a concern that they are not enjoying the game as much as they once did.  The Board  feels that we are here to enjoy ourselves and have fun. If any member has an idea on how we can change the requirements to play from the red tees let a board member know.  We have talked about a point system of age and handicap.  Here is another idea lets just open it up to any member that wants to play the red tees can.  Let say that someone has a illness and doesn't have the energy to play the white tees he can move forward and play the red tees until such time that he feels better.

The golf course will be punching the greens on Tuesday 12 September so we will cancel out scheduled on the Wednesday of that week.

On 25 October we are going to have our tournament and luncheon meeting like we did last year.  The sign up sheet will be out on the check in table starting the first of September.  The tournament this year will be best ball of foursome.  The computer will select the teams so the teams will be balanced based on handicap.  This way we will be able to play with different club members.

July 27, 2017

Here is NCGA's ruling on penalty scores:

8-4. Penalty Scores, Handicap Index Adjustment, and Withdrawal

a. General

A player must earn a Handicap Index. No player has an inherent right to a Handicap Index without providing full evidence of ability to the golf club's Handicap Committee. A Handicap Index must be changed only as warranted by the USGA Handicap System. Only the Handicap Committee where a player maintains a Handicap Index can adjust that player's Handicap Index. There must be no automatic increases at the beginning of a playing season or year. A Handicap Index is continuous from one playing season or year to the next. (See Section 6-1 and decision 8-4a/1.)

b. Penalty Scores for Failure to Post

If a player fails to post an acceptable score as soon as practical after completion of the round, the Handicap Committee has three options:

1) Post the actual score made by the player;

2) Post a penalty score equal to the lowest/highest Handicap Differential in the player's scoring record;

3) Post the actual score and a penalty score

The Handicap Committee is not required to notify the player prior to posting a penalty score.

c. Handicap Index Adjustment by Handicap Committee

The Handicap Committee has the responsibility of making certain that each player has a Handicap Index reflecting potential ability. Under the following circumstances, it will be necessary for the Handicap Committee to adjust the player's Handicap Index. However, the following list is not all-inclusive, and a Handicap Committee has the ultimate authority to adjust a Handicap Index under any circumstance that it feels necessary to do so. Before an adjustment becomes effective, the Handicap Committee must give the player an opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the proposed adjustment, either in writing or by appearing before the Committee. When an adjustment does become effective, it must be identified with the letter M, indicating that the Handicap Committee has modified the Handicap Index (e.g., 4.9M).

July 20, 2017

The club championship pairings have been emailed out to all the participants that I have a valid email for.  The parings are also posted on the web site under special tournaments.  If you wish to play your match on a different day or at a different time on Wednesday that is fine just let Augie know prior to the Wednesday that the match is scheduled for.

It has been noticed by the pro shop that some of our members are walking out onto the range gathering range balls.  So if you are the one that is doing it please stop.

Members that are continually not paying their five dollars this is not fair to the members that you are playing with.  They are under the impression that your score is being counted for a team score.

All score cards must be turned in by the time the last group has turned in their score card.  I will not be wasting my time waiting for someone that is not going to turn in a score card.

July, 6, 2017

There seems to be some issues with the skins games.  There has been a lack of interest in the members entering into the skins.  If anyone has any ideas to improve the games let a board member know.  One idea is to have two flights another one is to not have them at all.

The tournament on 10/25 will be changed to Best Net Ball of Foursome and the teams will be assigned by the computer so all the teams should be balanced.  It will be a shotgun start at 8am. with lunch and a meeting following the tournament. The lunch will be paid for by the club.  Sign ups Will close on the Wednesday prior to the tournament.

Starting in August the board will be looking for anyone that may be interested in running for a position on the board put your name in the cash box along with the position you are interested in.

June 8, 2017

Posting of Scores

It has come to the attention of Board that certain members of the Club are not posting their scorecard correctly or not posting their scores at all. The following is provided to aid members about posting their scores and comes from The NCGA Handicap Manual.

1. Adjusting Hole Scores

                a. Under the USGA Handicap System, each player is required to record a hole score for a hole not finished, not played, or not played under “The Rules of Golf,” And to reduce any hole score when it is higher than the maximum number allowed under Equitable Stoke Control.

                b. Unfinished Holes and Conceded Strokes- A player who starts, but does not complete a hole or is conceded a stroke must record for handicap purposes the most likely score. The most likely score may not exceed the players Equitable Stroke Control Limit and must be preceded by an “X”. There is no limit to the number of unfinished holes a player may have in round.

Equitable Stroke Control

Course Handicap                                             Maximum Number on any Hole

9 or less                                                                Double Bogey

10-19                                                                                     7

20-29                                                                                     8

30-31                                                                                     9

40 or more                                                                          10

2. Posting Scores

                a. If 13 or more holes are played, the player must post an 18-hole score. If 7 to 12 holes are played, the player must post a nine-hole score. In either case, scores for unplayed holes must be recorded as “X” par plus any handicap strokes that a player is entitled to receive on the unplayed holes.

Example: A player with a Course handicap of 30 stops playing after the 16 holes because of darkness.

The 17 is a par 3 and is the number 18 handicap-stroke hole. The player will record 3 (par) plus 1 handicap Stroke for an X-4 on the hole. Hole 18 is a par 4 and is the 12 number-stroke hole. The player will record 4 (par) plus 2 handicap strikes for an X-6 on hole 18.

                b. Rooster Run Senior Men’s Club requires that players must post their own scores within 3 days of each Wednesday’s tournament. Failure of to post 3 times annually could result in having a penalty applied to on individuals handicap.

June 1, 2017

For those of you that do not have a regular foursome, the weekly sign up sheet is now on the web site look for the tab that says "Weekly Sign up Sheet".  If you see an opening that you would like to fill in let Augie know by phone 707-762-4174 or email arivas1943@aol.com.  For those of you that have a regular tee time and are not going to make it also let Augie know so he can remove your name for that week.  It doesn't mean that you will lose your tee time it just gives our members that don't have a regular tee time a chance to play.

When we have a four man event Augie will take all the score cards that only have two names and put then on teams that only have three players.  If he has several score cards that only have three names he will take those and make four man teams.  To clear the air on the process is how he does it, say he has four cards with three names he places them upside down and draws one card that is the card that gets placed with the other three teams.

Be sure to post all your scores when ever you play.  Don't forget the make the proper adjustment to your score when you post.

As for the Windsor Home and Home tournament we haven't heard anything final other than it will be on August the first.  When we get more information We will let everyone know.

May 16, 2017

There seems to be some question on what scores can be posted and how they should be posted.  When a golf round is not completed the score should still be posted,  If you have completed 7 to 12 holes you must post a 9 hole score.  If you have completed 13 holes or more a score for 18 must be posted.  the uncompleted holes holes you would take one stroke plus handicap strokes.  for example: on a par 4  and you get two strokes you would post a 7.  if you don't get a stroke you would post a 5.  For more detail look on Handicap System Manuel Section 4-2 and 5-1a.  Fred will be posting any scores that are not posted.

May 9, 2017

Rooster Run Senior Men's Club will adopt Local Rule as described on page 70 of the Spring 2017 issue of NCGA Golf magazine. In summary, players will no longer be penalized for the accidental movement of the ball or ball marker on the green. If the ball or ball marker moves it must be replaced but no penalty stroke will be charged.

May 4, 2017

It was brought to the attention of the board that there are some players that are not posting all there scores.  All scores should be posted except for the irons only tournament that are on our schedule.  If we are playing a team event and you get to a hole that your score will not count enter your maximum score allowed with an "x" next to the score.

Also you must putt out on every hole if your score is going to count towards the team event and definitely when playing in individual tournaments such as skins, low net low gross.

This past week we had several groups go out as threesomes some of these groups could have paired up and gone out as foursomes and made room for other groups.  Also some of these threesomes had three carts that is another pro shop no no.  Mid day they had all the carts out on the course.  Lets try and not give the pro shop any reason to be head hunting for us.

March 15, 2017

Starting next week we will only have 17 tee times (68 players) for our tournaments until such time that we can show that we need more.  Be sure to get to the first tee 10 minutes ahead of time.

The home and home tournament that we had scheduled for June 19 has been canceled.  We will reschedule it for sometime in September.

Fred has discovered that some members are not posting their scores from the tournaments and also not posting scores on days that they are playing golf.  Post all your scores or he will be posting penalty scores.

APRIL 19 THE TOURNAMENT WILL BE CANCELED.  THE GREENS ARE BEING PUNCHED ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY OF THAT WEEK.

MIKE ROOT IS PLANNING A GOLF OUTING ON APRIL 21 AT PARADISE VALLEY IN FAIRFIELD  THE COST IS $48 TO RIDE AND $32 TO WALK FIRST TEE TIME IS 10 AM.  MIKE WILL HAVE A SIGN UP SHEET ON THE CHECK IN TABLE STARTING THIS COMING WEDNESDAY.

March 11,2017

We have had way to may members not phoning in to cancel their tee times if they are not going to show up.  The members that have missed to weeks in a row have been removed from the tee sheet and members have been moved round to fill those slots for next week.  Rob is going to met with the board to discuss this problem we may end up losing some of our tee time on Wednesday.  So if you want to continue having your tee times we must try to cooperate with the golf shop.  If anyone has any ideas as to solve this problem please let a board member know you suggestion.

March 5, 2017

The date for our home and home tournament is June 19 this year we are inviting Windsor and Oakmont and also trying to contact Bodega.  The date for Windsor is August 1.  The price will be the same as last year.  Fred Winters will be checking to make sure that everyone is posting their Wednesday score within two days.  We are finding that not everyone is posting their scores or not posting them correctly.  the points standings for both the net and gross are posted on the website looks like it may be an interesting race this year good luck to all.  Give a board member some feed back on the website as for anything you would like posted or changed.

January 26, 2017

Well we finally were able to get a tournament in before the end of January.  The turn out wasn't bad considering the condition of the course.  I guess some of us diehards that were getting cabin fever needed to get out and play.  Some couldn't handle the soggy conditions like Pete Sikora packing it in after two holes.  I have to hand it to Don DeRenzo for finishing all 18 being that the day before he said he may only play 9.  Congratulations Don.

The board has approved a new prize fund based on the $5 entry fee.  The Prize fund is posted on the prize fund section of the website.  If you have any questions regarding the prize fund please feel free to contact any of the board members.
